It's Monday, What Are You Reading? is a weekly meme hosted by Sheila @ Book Journey. I find it a great way to reflect on what I've just finished, so I can update all of my challenges, and plan my reading and reviewing week ahead.
FINISHED THIS WEEK
The School of Essential Ingredients by Erica Bauermeister
The Gods of Guilt by Michael Connelly
The Goddesses of Kitchen Avenue by Barbara Samuels
A Lesson in Secrets by Jacqueline Winspear
CURRENTLY READING
The Mysterious Affair at Styles by Agatha Christie
PICKING UP AT THE LIBRARY - These have all been recommended by bloggers over the last month. A real mix of genres.
A Murder at Rosamund's Gate by Susanna Calkins
Sandpiper Island by Donna Kaufman
Miss Dreamsville and the Collier County Literary Society by Amy Hill Hearth
Knots and Crosses by Ian Rankin
The Last Wife of Henry VII by Carolly Erickson
A QUESTION FOR BOOK REVIEWERS: I recently received my first book through NetGalley, but no info on exactly what they might be looking for. I know how to write a review, of course, but when do they want it posted in relation to the publication date?
I actually post my NetGalley reviews after reading the book. I'll often note that I've scheduled the post for my blog to go live a fortnight / week before or after the book's publication date.
ReplyDeleteI just write the same review in both NetGalley and my blog leaving off the publication date and the note that I rec'd the book from NG.
I think they sometimes use reviews in NG to promote a book.

Elizabeth, hope you enjoy NetGalley, all I ever do is post around the pub date like Deborah. Usually they don't like you publishing it too early. Each publisher has their own thoughts on it which can be found in about the publisher or something.
ReplyDeleteI like Barbara Samuel, must check out this one or wait till you review it if you are. I enjoyed Sandpiper Island too.
Hi Elizabeth. I went a little click-happy in Netgalley a year or two ago so I still have reads to finish! Therefore my answer is "way after" haha. ^_^''' One of my goals is to finish reading the netgalley stuff to bring up my request-to-review ratio.
ReplyDeleteRe: Netgalley....
ReplyDeleteMost publishers say that they don't want you to publish your review before the publication date, so that is the guideline I use for any book I get through them.
As Kathryn suggested, check the publisher details on Netgalley, they usually list their preferences there.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your reading selections this week,

I'm really looking forward to The School of Essential Ingredients, I've heard good things about it. Enjoy your reads this week!
ReplyDeleteI have not participated in NetGalley yet...I was approved for some galleys, but they didn't work/format on my Kindle. When I upgrade to the Paperwhite, I might try again.
ReplyDeleteI have only read the first Maisie Dobbs book, but this one looks good.
Thanks for visiting my blog.
I have several books from Netgalley but forget about them. I just post my reviews after I get the book read and use the same review on my blog.
ReplyDeleteI have yet to read my few NetGalley books! Then I will post to my blog as well!
ReplyDeleteI'm not much help with Net Galley. I signed up but haven't actually downloaded or read anything.
ReplyDeleteMost of these titles are new to me, but seeing the Agatha Christie title brings back memories from when I read every title of hers I could get my hands on. I would probably enjoy rereading most of them because it's been so long I've forgotten many.
I haven't ever read a book through Net Galley, but when I receive a book for review, unless the publisher asks for something else, I read it and review it within two weeks.
ReplyDeleteI first read The Mysterious Affair at Styles in high school. It's well over due for a re-read.
ReplyDeleteThe Last Wife of Henry VIII is one for my wish list. Thanks Elizabeth.

Hooray for Agatha Christie! I read my first this year but I really need to pick up some more pronto.
ReplyDeleteHappy reading!
I don't have anything to add to the NG advice. I loved The School of Essential Ingredients. Have a great week.
ReplyDeleteI don't think there are any requirements on when you have to post a review for a NG book. I usually try to post my review as close to the publication date as possible...but sometimes it ends up being awhile after. I rarely post before the pub date. And - I just copy and paste the review from my blog into NG.
ReplyDeleteI've read many NetGalley review books. I usually write my review, post on NG and add the link and date the review will go live on my blog. Sometimes a publisher will have specific requirements about when to post a review.
