Book Beginnings & Page 56: Shepherdess of Siena

Today I am linking up with Rose City Reader for Book Beginnings and Freda's Voice for Page 56. Follow the links for the lists of participants to read what's out there. It's like a bunch of book teasers, so you'll get a lot to add to the ever-growing TBR.
The Shepherdess of Siena is the third historical fiction novel by Linda Lafferty. It is based on the story of Virginia Tacci, a Renaissance shepherdess who brought glory to the people of Siena. I'm going o start it as soon as I finish Knots and Crosses, which I shared last week. It's turning out to be interesting  at the same time, so the quotes we saw last week were on the money.
Book Beginning
One of my treasured memories—one of the few I have of my parents—is riding on my father’s shoulders through the streets of Siena, my mother walking by our side. On sunny days, when there was little work or none at all, my father would close up his tiny leather workshop.

Di Montauto looked around. The despairing faces of the Drago contradaioli made him think of Siena’s defeat in the siege twenty-six years before. The bright, spirited flame of last night’s celebrations had been extinguished.

I received this advance copy from Lake Union Publishing through NetGalley. It comes out March 31, so be looking for my review soon.

If you've been thinking about improving your blog, either the content or layout, but haven't signed up for Bloggiesta, go check it out and sign up. It starts Monday.

  5. The Shepherdess of Siena sounds like it would be a good read. I don't think I read enough historical fiction.

  9. The cover is beautiful and the premise sounds so interesting. I love the writing in the excerpts - especially the beginning. I can get quite a picture of the little girl on her father's shoulders.

i have shut off the CAPCHA, so if you are asked to type a word or number, please let me know. It is very annoying and slows down comments.
