I was inspired to share this great crewel-work shadowbox by the birds who sing in the woods outside my bedroom window every morning, starting at about 4:30, as soon as they can see the sun starting to come up. My mom made this shadowbox in the 1970s. It has many different stitches, but the one that fascinates me still is the puffy cut loops that make up the nest. I've never done that particular stitch myself.
It hung in our upstairs hallway for 20 years, until the box separated from the backing and it was never fixed. I need to take care of those stains with Suzanne's special recipe for washing vintage linens, and then I will put it back together and hang it in my house.
I know nothing about birds, so if you know what kind these are, please share with us! I think the bird in the top box looks like the one on the Vintage Thingies Thursday logo, don't you?

ReplyDeleteElizabeth, you are right, that little bird looks like the logo, but don't know the names of the birds, maybe someone does. This is a real cute piece, I saw a large framed piece today at Goodwill, it was a winter scene and wish I would have purchased it, it really was lovely. Have a great VTT!

What a pretty shadow box. My mom did a lot of embroidery too. Good luck with cleaning it. I find that Oxyclean works wonders, especially on vintage things. Doesn't seem to harsh either.

Oh, I love this! What a wonderful treasure it is. My mother did crewel embroidery when I was young and I'm wondering if the nest is "turkey work" (or turkey stitch)? You make loops and then clip them.

Crewel embroidery is another of the many crafts that I have done over the years. This is beautiful! As for what type of birds these are, they are the singing birds that wake you up at 4:30 am! :)
