It's Thursday, the day for all things vintage to be shared with your blogging friends! Suzanne, our own ColoradoLady is the hostess for this long-running meme of family heirlooms, antiques, and junk-shop finds. Be sure to visit her and the other
Vintage Thingies Thursday participants.
I was inspired to share this great crewel-work shadowbox by the birds who sing in the woods outside my bedroom window every morning, starting at about 4:30, as soon as they can see the sun starting to come up. My mom made this shadowbox in the 1970s. It has many different stitches, but the one that fascinates me still is the puffy cut loops that make up the nest. I've never done that particular stitch myself.
It hung in our upstairs hallway for 20 years, until the box separated from the backing and it was never fixed. I need to take care of those stains with Suzanne's special recipe for washing vintage linens, and then I will put it back together and hang it in my house.
I know nothing about birds, so if you know what kind these are, please share with us! I think the bird in the top box looks like the one on the Vintage Thingies Thursday logo, don't you?

Good luck with your repairs.
ReplyDeleteElizabeth, you are right, that little bird looks like the logo, but don't know the names of the birds, maybe someone does. This is a real cute piece, I saw a large framed piece today at Goodwill, it was a winter scene and wish I would have purchased it, it really was lovely. Have a great VTT!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing such vintage birds with us to day. It is hard to tell from the work as to what kind of birds they are.
ReplyDeleteThat is sweet. I wish I could see the nest better....the are not as good as they used to be.
ReplyDeleteOh that is so cute! I love little birdies and they are stitched so beautifully. What a precious thing to have from your mother. Nice to see your blog again!
ReplyDeleteGood luck with with your work! I only know our local birds so I can't help you here.
ReplyDeleteMy mom was into crewel big time in the 70's. She made pillows, pillows and more pillows. Happy VTT!
ReplyDeleteThis is lovely crewel work. Hope you can get the stains out and reframe it...its just wonderful!
ReplyDeleteSeems like the birds tweet all day and half the night this time of year, doesn't they?
Such a sweet shadow box! Your Mom is quite a stitcher.
ReplyDeleteBlessings!

What a pretty shadow box. My mom did a lot of embroidery too. Good luck with cleaning it. I find that Oxyclean works wonders, especially on vintage things. Doesn't seem to harsh either.

Elizabeth..It's just gorgeous.. Your mother did beautiful work and I hope you can get the stains to release. I have to agree..the little bird dies like like the one on the VTT button..
ReplyDeleteHappy VTT, and have a wonderful weekend.
Oh, I love this! What a wonderful treasure it is. My mother did crewel embroidery when I was young and I'm wondering if the nest is "turkey work" (or turkey stitch)? You make loops and then clip them.
ReplyDeleteHappy VTT,
Sally
That is really clever...I've never seen a handmade work framed in a shadow box. I love to decorate with birds--thanks for sharing!

Crewel embroidery is another of the many crafts that I have done over the years. This is beautiful! As for what type of birds these are, they are the singing birds that wake you up at 4:30 am! :)
