Sailing the Ocean Blue

Happy Blue Monday with a Columbus Day theme! We all know that Columbus "sailed the ocean BLUE in 1492", so I thought I'd share some Columbus information that was not widely known back in the day when I was learning about Columbus. All of these images have blue in them.
In the late 15th century, most people no longer believed that the world was flat.Ferdinand and Isabella, the King and Queen of Spain did not actually give Columbus all of the money for his exploration. Instead, they called in a debt owed to them from the city of Palos in northern Spain, forcing the Palos government to provide two ships for the voyage, and got further financing from private Italian backers. It is believed that Columbus first made land on what is now the island of San Salvador in the Bahamas. Records show that Columbus made a total of 4 trips to the Caribbean and South America.During his final voyage, Columbus died on the island of Hispaniola and is buried in what is now the Dominican Republic.
One of the first known Columbus Day celebrations was in 1792 in New York City, and Colorado became the first state to celebrate the holiday in 1905.President Roosevelt declared October 12 to be celebrated nationally as Columbus Day in 1937, and it stayed that way until 1971 when Congress moved it to the second Monday in October.

  12. Elizabeth, this is a great topic for today! I just wrote a reponse and got called away, only to find it gone when I returned. Computers!

I wanted to say that I was surprised to read that the prevailing norm of thinkinng about the world being flat had changed when Columbus sailed. That's quite different from what we were taught as youngsters. And it doesn't surprise me that the monarchs called in a debt to pay Columbus to sail. It was one debt that paid off as the Spanish treasure ships that resulted from the discovery of America made Spain a very rich nation. St. Augustine (founded about 70 years later) was the last garrison city on the treasure route before the ships sailed the ocean for Spain. Walking the streets there, I wonder what secrets they could tell...

    XO,

    Sheila :-)

i have shut off the CAPCHA, so if you are asked to type a word or number, please let me know. It is very annoying and slows down comments.
