Today I am linking up with Rose City Reader for Book Beginnings and Freda's Voice for Page 56. Follow the links for the lists of participants to read what's out there. It's like a bunch of book teasers, so you'll get a lot to add to the ever-growing TBR.
Before I give you this week's quotes, I wanted to refer people to my review of Ian Rankin's Knots & Crosses, which I used two weeks ago with the creepy quotes, in case you wanted to see how it turned out.
The book I am using this week is Creature Comforts by British author Trisha Ashley. The blurb promises that it's "gripping" but it's chick-lit, so I don't know how gripping it will really be. It was just released in February, and I am looking forward to a fun read.
Book Beginning
That evening, Baz Salcombe’s old Range Rover, which was mainly used by his teenage son, Harry, and his friends, passed through the stone gateposts of the Sweetwell estate and paused briefly in the blackest of shadows by the turn to the Lodge, before pursuing an unsteady course up the dark, tree-lined tunnel of the drive. [HMM...Seems like the driver may have been drinking.]

Some startled creature went crashing away in the undergrowth and I said suddenly, ‘Sometimes lately I feel I’m being watched when I’m in the woods. I never used to have that feeling.’ ‘Do you think you’re being watched?’ ‘Not really and there’s never anyone there, so I’m sure I’m imagining it. But maybe Howling Hetty’s expanding her territory, or … other ghosts.’ I shivered and he took my hand in his. [Maybe this will be "gripping" if there's a stalker or ghost!]
I am enjoying using these 2 memes with books I haven't read. It makes me think about them differently than just reading the blurb. Plus, it has a cute cover that would catch my eye in a store. Now I am all excited to read Creature Comforts. I'll probably have an update, or even a review next week.
It may be chick lit but your friday 56 was gripping and caught my attention.
ReplyDeleteChick lit can be fun! This sounds like a good beginning, and the 56 excerpt makes me wonder if someone is being stalked. I hope you enjoy the book.
ReplyDeleteMy Friday post features GRACIANNA.
Absolutely love your 56! It doesn't seem to go with the book cover though, but I am still curious :)
ReplyDeleteSparrow's 56
I agree, your Pg 56 snippet did it for me. Thanks for sharing and have a great w.end.
ReplyDeleteHere's my meme for this week - Here is the link for this week@s meme, Best Friends…Forever? (Landry’s True Colors Series).
The cover so doesn't match the 56! I love it. Please check out mine... http://lisaksbookthoughts.blogspot.com/
ReplyDeleteYes, that second excerpt was definitely gripping...and books that feature wooded areas usually have me clutching my throat as I read.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing...and for visiting my blog.
Chick Lit or not, I like it.
ReplyDeleteThat 56 could get me to read Chick Lit and I don't read much of that..lol. Sounds really good.

ReplyDeleteHappy weekend!
I often will just be starting books when I do these mems so I know what you mean about looking at the book differently because of this exercise.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds a little creepy and like there may be a good mystery to it. I'd like to read more:)
