Those of you who have known me since last Christmas might be surprised with this one. I have ANOTHER vintage Night Before Christmas book. It's getting a little ridiculous how many of these keep popping up in the homes of my immediate family! This one belongs to my sister, Kathleen.
This version actually has a little mystery to it. Last year I shared a 1935 version that my father grew up with, published by Whitman Publishers and illustrated by Keith Ward, famous for creating the Dick & Jane characters. On Christmas Eve we always read Kathleen's vintage Night Before Christmas, that she has had for many years now, that we always were told had been my dad's as a child.
However, upon looking at it carefully last year, it was published in 1954, when he was over 20 years old. So how could that be? The 1954 edition has always been stored carefully with striped red and green gift wrap sort of around it, and part of the family legend has been that it was the paper the book was wrapped in when my dad received it as a child.
Then the questioning began. My poor dad! He couldn't remember either one really, or the story behind which was purchased when. It was finally determined that the 1935 version was his as a child. When he left home during the Korean War, my Aunt Kakee moved all the family things to a smaller apartment and threw tons of stuff out. When my dad returned home, the book couldn't be found and it was assumed that it had been tossed. The 1954 version must have been purchased as a replacement.
I think the gift wrap is because Kakee bought it for him as a gift. So that's the new story, and I think we'll stick to it.
The book I showed you last year had kind of a creepy looking father, and this one, illustrated by Louise W. Meyers has a child-like father, which is creepy in a different way. The thing both Kathleen and I loved about this book growing up was that all the red is velvet. You can see it really well if you enlarge the pictures.

ReplyDeleteDick & Jane. Whoa! Blast from the past. Dick & Jane are responsible for my being able to blog 'cuz they taught me to read! I would love to get my hands on a Dick & Jane book.
P.S. Are you enjoying our lovely frigid temps? No, me either.
Merry Christmas!

I loved seeing your books. I read your last years post and the "Today's Inspiration" blog too. I have a Night Before Christmas Golden Book I bought new in the 1990s, but the original copyright is 1949 so it looks vintage (except for the UPC on the cover).
ReplyDeleteHi Elizabeth,
ReplyDeleteI loved your book..the illustrations are so sweet and Santa is so jolly in his red velvet suit. I liked the story of your fathers book..what sweet memories a small book can bring back. Happy VTT..have a wonderful weekend.
This book is not a tradition in Aus. and so we haven't really done it with our boys so they missed out on something many families have done over the years. Nice work unraveling the family history on the book!
ReplyDeleteit's one of my fav Christmas story books..i LOVE it!
ReplyDeleteHmmmmm - - - some of those illustrations look A LOT like the ones I remember when reading that story as a child.
ReplyDeleteMy! Now that is an interesting story behind that cute little book. Happy Holidays!

Great post! I went back to see last year's too and I'm so totally struck by the differences in style for each period...the 30s book seems very classic (and I loved the quilt on the children's bed!)while this one from the 1950's strikes me as very Disney-ish.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing and have a wonderful holiday!
What a great post, and I love the mystery involved in it! It's a beautiful book, especially with the flocked parts to it. Old Christmas books are another thing on my every-growing list of must-haves!
ReplyDeleteI will be busy with family next Thursday, so I hope you have a very Merry Christmas Elizabeth!
Happy VTT!
Carol
I love the illustrations of those old books, don't you?? They are so sweet and innocent.
ReplyDeleteHappy holidays to you,
Jo
This is such a sweet book....I love it...reminds me of a book we had as a kid...Have a great VTT!
ReplyDeleteI love the story behind this book ... and so nice to have them from your dad.
ReplyDeleteGreat post...the story of the two Night Before books is interesting family lore.
ReplyDeleteThe one with the red velvet pictures is really special. I have a large collection of Clement Moore's poem in book sizes from miniature to oversized. Some are vintage but I haven't seen any with velvet enhanced illustrations.
Thanks for sharing. Happy Holidays,
Carrie
