It's a 2-FER post this week. I am participating in Beverly's Pink Saturday, where we have been invited to share a favorite holiday tradition along with our pinks, and Denise @ Bella Dreams is hosting Share the Joy, a holiday decorating and craft idea party.
Every family has traditions, some of which continue on into the next generation. Some are awesome, like my mom's coffee cake that I shared with you the other day, and others may be a pain in the neck, or in some cases slightly traumatizing. :-) For my family that tradition is how to decorate a Christmas tree. At 40 years old my sister still won't decorate her family tree. She'll do the lights, and go cut down the tree, and sit and visit with the family while they decorate, but she doesn't do the ornaments herself. My dad, who is in love with traditions, has certain guidelines, dare I call them "rules", for decorating the tree, although they were never written out until I did a Christmas scrapbook a few years ago. In writing they seem a little intimidating, or rigid, but I never thought they were.I think they make sense, and the first one my dad knows from firsthand experience. The first year he and his sister celebrated Christmas after their parents were gone, They put most of the ornaments on the side of the tree where they could see them, and it fell over, destroying a lot of great German glass ornaments that could have been mine someday! In the bowl above I have 3 vintage ornaments, but they are only from the 1960s.
I hope you enjoyed learning about my family's demented tree decorating and how it can create a scar that reaches into adulthood. I'm sure there are other funny, sweet, and maybe some weird, traditions being shared at How Sweet the Sound for Pink Saturday. And at Bella Dreams there will be lots of decorating ideas, craft tutorials, and recipes while folks Share the Joy!

- Evenly distribute ornaments around the tree. If one side has too many, it could fall over.
- Every ornament should hang/dangle. They should not be leaning or sitting on branches or other ornaments.
- Avoid having too many of the same color right next to each other.
- Large ornaments get hung on lower branches.
- Items that fly, such as angels and birds, get hung up high.
- Hanging shiny ornaments on inside branches makes the tree even more sparkly.
- Garland or ribbon should be put on the tree before ornaments, but tinsel should be put on after ornaments.

Your tree is really pretty, and well...I think I decorate mine all wrong...hahahaha.....you'd so be moving ornaments around over here at my house too!
ReplyDeleteI love old ornaments. We aren't very organized with the decorating. But this year we are going to try and do a tree with snowmen ornaments
ReplyDeleteHi Elizabeth, Such a funny post...Yes you must have rules...We have lots at our house..Most are made to make you laugh...We talked about the rules at Thanksgiving...that my brother had for my now sister-in-law when they were dating...We all had a great laugh...Do hope you have time to stop over at my place for a visit...
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas
xoxo
Julie
With two little ones, we have no tree decorating rules in my house... my whole life balance strategy of "picking your battles" and all. But someday!!
ReplyDeleteWhat beautiful decorations you have and the pink ornaments...love them. Enjoy the party and have a wonderful Holiday Season!
ReplyDeleteCheers
I love your beautiful pink vintage ornaments! Thanks for sharing the "rules" with us, Ha!
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Jacalyn
Thanks for sharing your useful rules, they seem to be all logic.
ReplyDeleteYour Christmas tree looks very pretty, that's enough reason for me to try follow your dad's rules.Like your ornaments too.
Fun! Thanks for sharing your holiday inspiration! Stop by to see my PINK tree!
ReplyDeleteElizabeth, those are pretty ornies, and I loved reading your dad's rules. He's right, you know. That makes for a prettier tree.
ReplyDeleteSometimes I follow the rules, and sometimes I break them... but the prettiest trees generally do follow those rules. My dad was a stickler about tinsel. LOL!
Happy Pink Saturday...
XO,
Sheila :-)
Actually, we sorta decorate alike. Without following these rules exactly, this is also how I decorate...hmmmmmmm, now I wonder, is this how it was done when I was smaller..and I continue the tradition now. Your tree is gorgeous Elizabeth..and it would be okay if you moved some of my ornaments around. Happy Pinks..have a lovely weekend.
ReplyDeleteHi Elizabeth~
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tree decorating tips! I love the vintage pink ornaments :)
Happy Holidays,
LuLu Kellogg
Your father's rules make sense to me, all except the one about birds. Birds land even on lower branches in "real" life, so I can imagine them all over the tree.
ReplyDeleteI think you're right on the button there - I always decorate the tree with lights first (we have a 5ft artificial tree, being in a flat with neighbours below us) and I use 5 sets! Then I put up the ornaments balancing the colours around the tree - red first, then some other colours, fill in again with more colour etc. Biggest danglies go at the bottom to fill in any space between the lower branches and the floor.
ReplyDeleteI always put tinsel in after the lights and before the ornaments - but last year decided it looked a little bare and not frou frou enough, so am doing what your Dad said and adding the tinsel last! What a sensible man. And a lovely memory.
Happy Pink Saturday!
Elizabeth, your vintage ornaments are lovely. They must be a treasure to you. I also loved to read your father's rules. I must have OCD. They don't seem unreasonable to me :-). I hope you are having a great day and looking forward to the holidays.
ReplyDeleteLOL! We have all the same rules! There are a couple of exceptions.
ReplyDeleteThe birds can land anywhere as long as it's on the tip of a branch and the garland (when we use it) goes on second to last.
We also have a couple of extras (don't tell your sister)!
You can never have too many lights and, if you use tinsel, it has to be hung 1-3 strands at a time and it is always carefully draped over a branch and never thrown on the tree!
This is how my mother taught us to decorate a tree. My dad got out of the house on "tree day." I had my own little tree to practice with when I was too young to help and so did my daughter. Now we are just as picky as my mom!
Your tree is beautiful!
My hubby and I were just talking about this! I have no memories of decorating trees when I was little. My mom always put the ornaments on the tree and we watched since we never did it "right". I now hang the glass ornaments and let my son (5) hang the non breakable ones. I try REALLY hard to not move any, but I may "help" him with placement sometimes!! hehehe!
ReplyDeleteI love your vintage pink ornaments! I remember when the kids were little and they always wanted to help me decorate the tree, it would drive me CRAZY how they would hand a bunch of them all in the same spot! I'd have to sneak back when they weren't paying attention and rearrange things.
ReplyDeleteLove the vintage ornaments. Thank you for the tree decorating tips. They sound very similar to the ones I learned as a child.
ReplyDeleteHappy Pink Saturday.
That was hilarious! I think there is a method to the madness, so to speak...lol
ReplyDeleteLooks good, so maybe we should all follow those guidelines, eh?! Thanks for sharing and making me smile!
Happy Pink Saturday!!
Hi Elizabeth, I love your tree decorating tradition and rules. That is exactly how I decorate my tree. My mom had those rules. I wonder if many years ago someone published rules for trimming a tree. HA! I really had to laugh when you said you would move an ornament. So would I!!! How sad that the German ornaments were broken. I love the German ornaments and covet them. I should ask forgiveness huh?
ReplyDeleteIt is so cold here tonight. It snowed this morning. It did not stick.
Have a great weekend.
Hugs, Jeanne
Elizabeth, I am sitting here laughing aloud. I like your father's tree decorating guidelines, and I agree 100% I must admit that I have very similar guidelines. I've wanted to move a few ornaments on tress myself.
ReplyDeleteHappy Pink Saturday. Your tree looked beautiful, and your special ornaments are a treasure.
Actually it makes perfectly good sense to me! Peace, Mollye
ReplyDeleteLove the decorations and your tree decorating rules
ReplyDeleteElizabeth! (long time since I visit here) I love the pink ornaments! The "rules" are awesome too. My Mom drilled almost exactly the same ones into me which I have passed to my grown kids!
ReplyDeleteHope you are well. and is that a new profile picture or have i just not noticed til today? It's very good!
Too funny. I'm Jewish so I never knew there were rules for Christmas Tree decorating!
ReplyDeleteI love your excellent pink vintage ornaments! Thanks for sharing. The "rule" are awesome too.
ReplyDeleteI never really thought about tree rules, but I would imagine everyone has them. If you decorate your tree every year, I am sure you would have to say, you have rules. I love your dad, that was great, but I am very sorry you lost some precious keepsakes, Happy Pink Saturday, Char
