Anita Shreve, author of the wildly popular The Pilot's Wife, brings us Margaret, a young woman questioning herself on many levels, in A Change in Altitude.
From the Publisher: Margaret and Patrick have been married just a few months when they set off on what they hope will be a great adventure-a year living in Kenya. Margaret quickly realizes there is a great deal she doesn't know about the complex culture of her new home, and about her own husband.
A British couple invites the newlyweds to join them on a climbing expedition to Mount Kenya, and they eagerly agree. Margaret is the weaker and more timid of the climbers, and Diana, their new friend, the strongest, and very competitive. During their difficult ascent, a horrific accident occurs. In the aftermath of the tragedy, Margaret struggles to understand what happened on the mountain and how these events have transformed her and her marriage, perhaps forever.
The excitement of experiencing life in Africa for a year is overtaken by Margaret's introspection and personal growth, shared with the reader in the third person, making the reading of her musings seem almost like an analytical exercise. This book made me think about how people go about making major life decisions such as moving to another continent or who to marry, as well as wonder how long one has to know another to truly know them.
