We all know that I don't cook for two, one, or one hundred, but I have a great vintage cookbook to share with you this week for Vintage Thingies Thursday.
Betty Crocker's Dinner For Two Cook Book, copyright 1958 sits in glory in my mother's pantry, barely touched for 50 years. She didn't buy it for herself, so she thinks it was a shower gift; someone helping out a new young wife with how to make smaller meals. The book is no longer in print, but you can buy used copies through Amazon for about $2.50 and "collector's" copies starting at $20.00.
Besides recipes, the book has information and advice on a variety of topics, like types of meat, history of foods, and serving suggestions.
And of course the fabulous illustrations that we all love so much, like this pig from the page above. I had to crop and rotate it so you could get the full effect!
There's so many neat pages that you'll need to come back next week to see more of the illustrations in this great book Now take off to visit Suzanne at ColoradoLady, our Vintage Thingies Thursday hostess.

Boy, that is a lot of food on the cover for two people!
ReplyDeletethose illustrations are cool. I love the lamb--I thought it was a poodle until I enlarged it and saw the title.
ReplyDeleteI just loved your vintage cookbook! I'm troubled though by the fact that I am calling something vintage that was published the same year that I was born!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!
The cover does have a lot of good
ReplyDeletelooking food on it 4 two. Looks
like a seven course meal for two?
I am glad cooking has changed since
then, none of us would ever be out
of the kitchen otherwise! :)
I guess I'm vintage, too! I enjoy cookbooks of the 50s and could spend hours going through them when I was 9 or 10. It was a favorite recreation.
ReplyDeleteI am not much of a cook but I think it would be fun to look through. 1958 was a good year :)
ReplyDeletewhat a fab cookbook..i love those illustrations, they're priceless!
ReplyDeleteLook at the pig! The ilustrations in old cookbooks are always fun.
ReplyDeleteA shower gift - how cool! Speaks to the era.
ReplyDeleteI found this one last year in someones trash pile...I of course rescued the poor thing....It does have some awesome graphics in it. Retro cool.
ReplyDeleteI still have the orange BC cookbook that was given to me as a wedding gift - - - circa 1975. It USED to get used a lot - - - not so much now that I DON'T COOK.
ReplyDeleteHappy VTT,

I just popped in from Justine's blog and had to see what the name of your blog is that is SO offensive that someone wouldn't participate in a SWAP w/you??? HILARIOUS!
ReplyDeleteCute blog (and name). I'm following so I can come back and spend an afternoon~
Have a great day,

This is one cookbook I might could benefit from. I find it very hard to learn to cook for just two people....I love the illustrations, they are so sweet. Have a great VTT and a wonderful weekend.
ReplyDeleteThank you for stopping by my Pink Saturday...sorry to take so long to work my way around to all the lovely comments I received.....can't wait to have enough time to read through your blog....looks fun! xo jana
ReplyDeleteI probably needed that "Dinner For Two" book when we became empty nesters! It took a while to adjust to meal prep for just us two without 4 ravenous teenage males!
ReplyDeleteThe pig is too cute to eat!!
ReplyDeleteSuch a pretty book, and the illustrations are so 50ish :D
ReplyDeleteThat is a real neat cookbook. It is one you will sure want to keep. I do not cook much anymore, but if I did this one be helpful.
ReplyDeleteGreat Cookbook! Love the illustration with the lamb-glad its not on the same page with a lamb chop recipe!
ReplyDeleteI am not such a great cook but that doesn't stop me from loving cookbooks! This one is on "my list to find." Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteHappy VTT and Have a great weekend!
What a cool cookbook! I want one, I want one! I'm going over to eBay pronto. Love the illustrations and I must say, your post is entertaining, informative, visually pleasing and all kinds of good stuff.
ReplyDeleteOh. And what do you mean you don't cook for one? You're so funny but now I'm worried. Are you eating alright?
I just loved your vintage cookbook! thanks for sharing it!
ReplyDeleteLOVE the illustrations in old cookbooks!
ReplyDeleteI got this cookbook for a wedding present in 1967... the pages are ragged, stained, and often stuck together from drips, but hubbie still requests several that are in there.
ReplyDeleteI actually gave a new clean one to my daughter-in-law for a shower gift a couple years ago. IT's truly a classic. Thanks so much for highlighting it.
