We all know that I don't cook for two, one, or one hundred, but I have a great vintage cookbook to share with you this week for Vintage Thingies Thursday.
Betty Crocker's Dinner For Two Cook Book, copyright 1958 sits in glory in my mother's pantry, barely touched for 50 years. She didn't buy it for herself, so she thinks it was a shower gift; someone helping out a new young wife with how to make smaller meals. The book is no longer in print, but you can buy used copies through Amazon for about $2.50 and "collector's" copies starting at $20.00.
Besides recipes, the book has information and advice on a variety of topics, like types of meat, history of foods, and serving suggestions.
And of course the fabulous illustrations that we all love so much, like this pig from the page above. I had to crop and rotate it so you could get the full effect!

Boy, that is a lot of food on the cover for two people!

I guess I'm vintage, too! I enjoy cookbooks of the 50s and could spend hours going through them when I was 9 or 10. It was a favorite recreation.

ReplyDeleteI still have the orange BC cookbook that was given to me as a wedding gift - - - circa 1975. It USED to get used a lot - - - not so much now that I DON'T COOK.

This is one cookbook I might could benefit from. I find it very hard to learn to cook for just two people....I love the illustrations, they are so sweet. Have a great VTT and a wonderful weekend.

ReplyDeleteI probably needed that "Dinner For Two" book when we became empty nesters! It took a while to adjust to meal prep for just us two without 4 ravenous teenage males!

ReplyDeleteI got this cookbook for a wedding present in 1967... the pages are ragged, stained, and often stuck together from drips, but hubbie still requests several that are in there.
ReplyDeleteI actually gave a new clean one to my daughter-in-law for a shower gift a couple years ago. IT's truly a classic. Thanks so much for highlighting it.
