Top 10 Tuesday 2/17

Top 10 Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.  Each week they post a new Top Ten list that one of their bloggers answers. Everyone is welcome to join. You can read all the posts on their blog. This week's topic is Book Related Problems. I only have five.

Just being able to see the text! I have unusual problems with my vision, so an older paperback where the pages have yellowed are difficult because of the lowered contrast between text and background, as are some where the publisher used a smaller than average font. One way to get around the issue is to read large print books, which my library as well as the others in our network are great about buying. Sometimes I go with an e-reader so I can make the font larger as well as adjust the contrast, but I'm limited as to what I can get at my library and I hate to pay for books. Audio books aren't a solution because they actually put me to sleep!

Weird gunk inside the book. Gross! Since most of what I read are library books, sometimes people leave bookmarks or other flat things in the book. But a globber of mud or grass? Something that looks like smeared blood? Ain't nobody got time for that!

Dust covers. They're pretty and they help save the book. But they tear and crease. Libraries put the protective cover on them, which is kind of funny if you think about putting protection on something that is also protection. However, real people don't, so when I borrow from a friend I live in fear of messing it up. I put the dust cover somewhere out of all reach while I'm reading.

Big formatting problems. Not just a lower case where it should be upper, but entire paragraphs copied and repeated, or indenting some paragraphs but not others.

Misuse of English conventions. In the last couple of years I've started questioning if publishers use copy editors anymore. These aren't typos, or using the vernacular in dialog, just biggies like run on sentences and misuse of prepositions, which I notice most often.

It's fun to read about what riles up other people, so stop by The Bold and the Bookish to see what they have to say. What is your top book-related peeve?

  1. Do you ever leave the dust jacket on the shelf to "safe the spot" for your book? I do that!

  3. I love and hate dust jackets for those exact reasons. I always take mine off whenever I'm reading a hard cover book because I really don't want to ruin it in any way.

  4. Great list! I'm never quite sure what to do with my dust jackets.

  5. Now that I have aging eyes, I find it difficult to read smaller print, which is why I love reading on the Kindle or listening to an audiobook.

  6. Hmm, I feel like editors leave author a lot of liberty, considering, because some sentences I read are not always making sense. Hmm :// And some metaphors you're like whaaat?

  8. I agree about audiobooks putting you to sleep. I tried listening to The Notebook, but the reader's voice was so slow and articulated with the North Carolina accent zzz

  9. lol, weird gunk, yes! I once found a spider smashed into the front of a book at the library. Needless to say, I did not take it home with me. ;)

i have shut off the CAPCHA, so if you are asked to type a word or number, please let me know. It is very annoying and slows down comments.
