We've had several beautiful, sunny, warm days in a row here in the Boston area. Nature is teasing us for sure! I don't trust it; I still remember the huge snowstorm we got on April Fool's Day in 1997. This warm weather has inspired me to bring you something springy for
Vintage Thingies Thursday. So sit back and Think Spring! I've shared a lot of my mother's crewel work from the 1970s with you, but the blog world has been deprived of seeing what I created back in the day.
This cute little floral is a kit from Crewel by Cathy, a small company from Tariffville, CT. For our Girl Scout needlework badge we went on a tour of the factory, which was in an old mill over the Farmington River. We all received little six inch rulers and a booklet of crewel knots. Then we each picked out the kit we wanted for our badge project. I remember thinking it was fun making daisy knots on my daisy picture! It's hung in my parents' hallway since I finished it at age nine. Even the wallpaper hasn't changed!
I hope my cute little daisies has gotten you excited for spring. For more fun vintage goodies pop on over to ColoradoLady and visit Suzanne, our
Vintage Thingies Thursday hostess.

Spring! soon! Yes yes yes.
ReplyDeleteIt's funny how some crafts are really popular for a few years, and then everyone forgets about them.
ReplyDeleteNice post!
ReplyDeleteI love your crewel embroidered daisy picture!! What a fun girl scout badge project!
ReplyDeleteI ave several pieces of crewel embroidery and needlepoint that I did back in the 70s. I have not seen the one your mother made. It is very pretty.
ReplyDeleteIt is sweet! I love daisies! As a matter of fact when I got married I chose to have daisies on all of the table. This may sound silly but I think of them as happy flowers.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely picture. It sure brings back memories.

Your work was beautiful Elizabeth.. and to have done that at age 9 is something to be proud of. It's se very pretty and spring like. It shouldn't maybe be long now before spring gets here..I hope,I hope. Happy VTT,have a wonderful weekend.
ReplyDeleteYour lovely crewel work has stood the test of time and still looks great. (Love the wallpaper too. Wish they'd make that print in a fabric!)
ReplyDeleteVery nice! And the wallpaper is vintage too? How cool is that!
ReplyDeleteFun memories and how sweet that your parents still have it hanging. You did nice work at age 9!
ReplyDeleteHow sweet that you still have this! I used to love doing crewel work, but I just can't seem to see well enough anymore....
ReplyDeleteAmazing how we parents hang onto the bits & pieces our kids have made. I have quite the collection myself.
ReplyDeleteI also used to do crewel, but then quilting took over my life!
Lovely crewel work. I also tried crewel work. I had an old oak tree picture that I loved and my mother had given me a "lazy leopard" piece but I lost both in a house fire. I have a couple that I have picked up at yard sales and will post at a later date.
ReplyDeleteNice work, well worth a badge!
ReplyDeleteSometimes, I get so sad thinking nothing I had from childhood was saved, and I see your wonderful parents saved everything...it does not help!!! What a treasure trove of goodness you always share, this is so sweet, and kudos to your parents for valuing your things and keeping all of your goodies! I know you are so glad now that they did! Oh, how fun it would be to tour their home, the basement especially ;) Have a great VTT and a wonderful weekend.
ReplyDeleteThat is really cute! I remember my mom embroidering lots of cushions with crewel in he 70's.
ReplyDeleteI love the crewel you did at age nine! I did some crewel work in the seventies and eighties, always enjoyed stitching a picture. Thanks so much for sharing. Peace, Stephanie
ReplyDeleteSo cute that your parents still have it on their wall. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteAren't parents great? My mom had a picture I colored of a bowl of fruit when I was in kindergarten framed and hanging in her kitchen...so sweet!I have never done this kind of craft, but I remember seeing ones my sister did...

ReplyDeleteThat is so great, Elizabeth - I especially like that your mom still has the piece hanging... your parents are so special! Please give them my regards! ~kari
ReplyDeleteyou did that when you were nine? I'm impressed :-)
ReplyDeleteVery nice!
Elizabeth, you're looking younger and younger these day! Is there a fountain of youth in Franklin that I don't know about? LOL!
ReplyDeleteI used to do crewel back in the 70's also! Don't have any to show now. And, oh, I remember that '97 storm - Mister had the flu and I was out shoveling while 8 months pregnant! Ah, good times, ha, ha!
What a lovely treasure...it's great to maintain a family home thru the years and to keep things in place.
