Here's Don helping his wife Betty with her zipper. Don't you love the cigarette hanging out of his mouth? I love the things that are shown that were considered socially acceptable, including kids running through the house wearing dry cleaning bags over their heads, and Sally, Don's 8 year old daughter mixing drinks for the adults. Of course everyone is smoking all of the time, too, even the pregnant ladies, who often have a drink in hand! The story lines are interesting, and the people intriguing, because they all seem very contained, as if they are holding back their full personalities and opinions. My favorite thing about the show, however, are the clothes and the sets. As you know, I am a fan of vintage 1960s fashion and jewelry, and the women on this show are all decked out. Most of the executives' homes are decorated in the full glory of mid-century modern, a few are a little bit traditional or colonial, in the way those styles were interpreted at the time.
Peggy, the first female at the agency who is a copywriter, not a secretary, lives alone in an apartment, not with her mother or a roommate, as was the standard. Check out her TV, my dad has the same one in the basement with the same stand! Joan is the head secretary, what we today would call the office manager. She is very smart and organized, but has weilded the power of her femininity so well, that her brains are not appreciated as they should be. Joan and Peggy are my favorite characters because they are both single gals with different goals, and I am amazed at how just 30 years after this time period, as I entered the workforce, my own options and "rules" for the work place are so different.
I was fiddling around on the web site and watched a video tour of the costume shop, and did this neat thing where I Mad Menned Myself. I got to pick the background, body style, hair, eyes, nose, accessories, clothes, and colors of everything. I went with the body that was most like myself, but I could have chosen the skinny young secretary body. Here I am entering the Sterling Cooper office, with Peggy seated at the desk and office manager Joan standing behind me.
There is also a Cocktail Guide. I've heard of most of the drinks, but a Greyhound and the Moscow Mule were new to me.
Mad Men is nominated for 16 Emmys, and I highly recommend checking it out if you love the style and flair of the days of Camelot.Don't forget my book giveaway while you're here. 8 chances to win!

I saw a video clip of this show just the other day...I don't know how I missed this series...but, I'm rectifying that by ordering the first season on Netflix.
