Everyone in blog land seems to have tea cups except me. I was feeling very left out of your little club until I remembered this awesome cup that I've had since I was a little kid. I keep it displayed on my corner hutch, and see it so often that I'd forgotten it was there! It has a nice story behind it, too.
When were were little, my sister and I would often have sleepovers with our Aunt Kakee, my dad's sister. Of course, being my DAD'S sister, she had and still has, tons of old things. She had a great collection of unusual tea cups. Some with tall bases, many with tons of gold trim, all hand painted, and all from pre-WWII Japan.
We were allowed to choose a cup for breakfast and have very milky coffee, which we thought was awesome, of course. Eventually she let us each choose a cup to keep, and they became our coffee cups at home on weekends. I think these cups and the rituals and traditions around them are one of the reasons that breakfast is my favorite meal.
Every Saturday my dad would make a yummy bacon and egg breakfast, and Sundays he made pancakes or waffles. He still does this for my mom to this day! We were one of those families that always had dinner together, but my best memories are of the breakfasts, discussing what we were going to do that weekend, what we had learned at school, and just yakking because there usually wasn't anywhere to rush off to.
Do you have certain objects that bring back big memories? Do your kids like to hear the stories? My niece and nephews do!

ReplyDeleteYou have one more tea cup than I do!
ReplyDeleteFunny, but I don't remember any family breakfasts. Yours sound like they were fun.
Your site is really wild!
ReplyDeleteI see the title Evil Overlord and then a delicate china teacup.
See you next Thursday,
Evelyn in Montreal
Beautiful dainty litle teacup!
ReplyDeleteLoved your post and sharing such cute little tea cup.
ReplyDeleteOh wow, that teacup is truly beautiful, Elizabeth. What a treasure! I love the story behind it too! What fabulous breakfast memories.
ReplyDeleteI'd say the one thing that brings back the most memories is the hand-made wood rolling board that my grandmother and mother used every year to roll out Struffoli cookies for Christmas. I hope to some day inherit that.
Justine :o )
Lovely teacup and even lovelier story! There's nothing like those pleasant memories from childhood.
ReplyDeleteNice memories, Elizabeth. My DH has made Saturday breakfast for the family ever since we have been married (33 years) and has missed them very few times. It has carried over to my son and now he makes breakfast for his wife.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful teacup and beautiful memories to go with it.
ReplyDeleteYour teacup and your memories are lovely. I do have a tea set of my grandmother's that I keep in my hutch and enjoy looking at.
ReplyDeleteThe flatware I use brings back many memories. One set was my mother's and one set was my grandmother's holiday flatware. I so enjoy using them and thinking of two people I love so much and all the family dinners where we used them.
What a lovely tea cup. I love the colors. Sometimes, I will spot something at an estate sale or thrift store that will take me back to my childhood. Every once in a while, I see a piece of pottery from a set we used to have when I was a child. I don't know why I don't every buy them, they just recall a memory of the dinner table.....it's funny how certain things will do that.
ReplyDeleteHave a great VTT!
Your teacup and saucer is gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteI love the shape of the cup..it's just beautiful. Happy VTT Elizabeth..have a wonderful weekend.
You and your sister must have felt so grown up, drinking coffee in those fancy cups! That must have been nice eating breakfast as a family!
ReplyDeleteThis tea cup is awesome and the story that goes with it even "awesomer!" I'm SO glad you remembered to share both with us.

ReplyDeleteI can see why you chose this cup, it is very pretty!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great childhood you had! My husband USED to make Sunday morning breakfast when my nest was full.
ReplyDeleteI understand how you can overlook a pretty item. As I was packing, it was almost like Christmas; my guess is that I'll feel the same way when I finally get to unpack.
What a beautiful teacup and what a precious sweet memory to go with it!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful memory all centered around a teacup. No wonder we are all addicted to our vintage items!
ReplyDeleteHi Elizabeth, I so love sweet little tea cups too. Sweet memories! If you get a chance stop by my blog, I'm having a fun contest! Pass it on.
ReplyDeleteI love your handpainted teacup! It looks to be in perfect condition! I remember my mom letting us drink milky coffee with 2 lumps of sugar - we loved it, too!
ReplyDeleteCheers!
I was by earlier but forgot to comment. I think I followed a link somewhere. I'm prone to wander!:0 Loved your post. Precious memories and lovely tea cup. Happy VTT.
ReplyDeleteYour cup and your memory are beautiful!
ReplyDeleteMemories are why many of us make the purchases we do, when it comes to vintage or antiques! A very lovely tea cup - a delight to the eye!
ReplyDeleteOh Elizabeth, welcome to the "I have only one teacup" club.
ReplyDeleteYours is beautiful and I love your story.
My mother's things have all disappeared pretty much, I have nothing from my childhood and a precious few things of hers.
Loving vintage and retro as I do, I've found that it's nice to shop for those but they really have very little meaning unless they have chips from our childhood or memories included.
It's a melancholy smile therefore, but I do so love hearing stories of yours. :)
It is rather interesting for me to read that article. Thanks for it. I like such topics and anything that is connected to them. I would like to read more on that blog soon.
