Summer is the time for blender drinks, right? Pina Coladas, Margaritas, Daquiris, and of course all kinds of smoothies, refreshing and sweet! I am a fan of raspberry margaritas, loving the sweet and tart mix. Or try a frozen lemonade with iced tea. Scrumptious! For Vintage Thingies Thursday this week, I have the perfect summer appliance, a blender.
This was given to my mom as a wedding shower gift in 1963, and it is the blender she still uses to this day. It weighs a ton, and only has 3 speeds, but the pitcher is super-thick glass and the blades are ultra-sharp metal. I checked out the Waring web site and they still make almost the exact model, marketing it to professional bars. It costs $130.00; I wonder what it cost in 1963. Whatever it was, my parents have sure gotten somebody's money worth out of it!

I think my blender is from about 1970 & I got it with S&H Greenstamps. I have never made drinks in it.

ReplyDeleteMy oldest would probably be the toaster..it's a 1970's version and still works like a dream. And..my favorite drink is a frozen margarita.

My oven is a Tappan...I am not sure how old it is...but I think pretty darn old...waiting on it to kick the bucket and would love to have a new oven with digital features...still turning knobs here. Oh well, I am thankful to have an oven.

Wow. I thought mine was old. That is one purdy mixer. I have an old waffle iron, you know the kind. The kind you never use because you can just buy frozen waffles. It's too much trouble. LOL.

Wow! I wonder how many more years mom will get out of this? Looks like it could survive most anything. Maybe she should send the picture to Waring with a detailed note of all the use she has gotten from it and they might put her in a commercial :0)

That is great. They really have gotten their money's worth out of it. I don't really have any old appliances - our mixer was 20 something and then died and I have a vintage small pressure cooker I got brand new at an estate sale still had the tags on it. We love it for making roasts with all the fixins.
ReplyDeleteBack then, they made things to last. Not so anymore. I have a lot of old stuff around here. I received a hand mixer for a wedding present 33+ years ago and I'm still using it. Like I said, they don't make 'em like that anymore!

I always look for one of these blenders because of the thick glass, I will find one and when I do I hope it works!! Oh, and I like my margaritas with no salt!! Have a great VTT!
ReplyDeleteYou're so lucky to have this blender still in working order! My oldest appliance is also a blender - and Osterizer in Avocado Green I was given for my 21st birthday in 1971! Other than replacing the blade about 20 years ago, I still use it regularly!

We have owned that bender too. It makes a wonderful wrrrying noise and is very powerful. I can see why they market them to professional. I bet it was expensive in 1953 because Waring was considered top of the line.
ReplyDeleteOur oldest appliance is a Braun coffee grinder that we bought in 1979 or so. Still works perfectly!
Very neat post! You had me really thinking about appliances. I don't have anything older than the frig we bought in the 80's. I never considered it 'old'. There are a few parts around from Grandma's time. Mixer, vacuum but they don't work.
ReplyDeleteThat is a very cool old blender. My oldest appliance has to be an electric wok we got as a wedding gift in 1988 (and I probably haven't used it since 1989!) My mom and dad still have a deep fat fryer that they got as a wedding gift in 1953...it still works great and still makes the best french fries.
