Is it Comment-Able?

I didn't participate in the Blog Improvement Project during March because the topic of utilizing social media didn't interest me, but I'm back with a bang for April!
April is going to be about making our blogs more comment-friendly. Here's what Kim has to say about choosing this topic: During the goal setting project in January, a lot of people made it a goal to leave more blog comments. This is important, but I think it’s also vital that once you get a new reader at your blog it’s easy for them to engage with you by commenting on your posts.
In the last few months I've noticed a decline in comments, as some of you will remember me whining about mentioning. Jamie Harrop describes the importance of comments in his article 7 Reasons Why I Won’t Comment On your Blog.
Commenting is such an important part of blogging. It’s what often separates the blogosphere and other more traditional forms of media. And while we all set out in the blogosphere to receive visitors to our blogs, it’s comments, or the lack of them, that really worries us in those early months. “Why is nobody commenting on my blog?” is a frequently asked question in any blogosphere circle. Far more frequent than “How do I get more visitors?” and other such questions. Blogging is, after all, community based and connecting with other people and seeing them connect with us is what often drives blog authors.
In addition to Jamie's article, Kim also found 2 others that I really liked.
10 Techniques to Get More Comments on Your Blog by Darren Rose
The art of hoisting comments at Beatblogger.com focuses on journalism blogs but has a great way of giving attention to thoughtful comments.
Well, I read these articles and realized that I do many of the things they suggest. I try to reply to questions I am asked in my comments. The only time I don't is when the blogger does not have an email reply or has chosen to not show their email on their Blogger profile page. I got read of word verification and owner approval for comments. I still get the comments emailed to me, but they go up right away so others can see them and have a dialog if they'd like, and it doesn't stop anyone who can't see the word verification, like me! It's been this way for 10 months and I haven't received any spam comments. I also have my comments appear in their own window. This way visitors can see the post if they need to while writing their comment.
I like the idea of highlighting certain comments and rewarding frequent commenters, so I'm going to think about the best way for me to work those into my repertoire. Maybe a giveaway for most comments each month, responding to questions once a week in a post, something like that. All ideas and suggestions are welcome!
I also discovered 2 reasons why my comments had gone down. One is that many people are now reading the Evil Overlord in Google Reader and the other is a problem between Blogger and Internet Explorer that was giving some people a "stack overflow" message and freezing up their computers when they visited. I found out the solution to that problem is to empty your Temp Internet folder. Or switch to Firefox as your browser.
I hope I can make my blog more comment-able. I blog for fun, and one of the things that makes it fun is getting interesting comments that teach me something, ask me questions or tell me things about the commenter, so I am truly meeting people and becoming part of a community.
If you are looking for great ideas for improving your own blog, I highly recommend visiting Kim @ Sophisticated Dorkiness where she has all of the topics and articles listed. You can join in on the Blog Improvement Project at any time, or opt out of any topics that hold no interest for you.

I got rid of word verification a while ago and have had no difficulty with spam. (Shhh!)

I still feel that the best way to GET comments is to LEAVE comments.

You do a good job of that.

You know, I never read the blogs I've subscribed to in Google Reader. If the option is there, I choose email and then head on over to the site.

I'm participating in a different blogging challenge but so far, I'm behind.... Oh who knew?

It's really worthwhile to stop and assess once in a while, isn't it?
I'm happy to be participating in a challenge. It forces me to do it.

Uh huh, I do most of those thing also, but I do keep comment moderation on. Why? I guess I should get rid of that, eh? But sometimes someone wants to say something privately and for some reason doesn't email me instead.
I HATE word verification but some people don't realize that for a personal blog it's really ridiculous to use. And the embedded comments? Hate those too, 'cause then you have to scroll all the way down to the end of the post, and the end of the comments to leave yours!

I believe I get comment because I visit blogs and leave comments. But there are blogs that I have left a daily comment for over a year and they have never left me a comment. I hate word verification but don't mind comment moderation and use it myself because I want to make sure I have read and if needed responded to every comment left for me. I love your blog. And it was very interesting. I would love a tutorial on why the place where you comment is different on different blogs. I haven't figured that out yet.

Have A Terrific Tuesday

I thought I'd try responding in the comments as suggested by one of the articles.
Comments look different on different Blogger blogs based on the Setting the blogger has chosen. Under Settings select Comments and there are 3 choices, embedded, separate window and same window.

Even if comment moderation is turned off, you will still receive an email for every individual comment that you can read in your email. It just means they will be posted without you having to do anything. Some readers like this because they like to read other comments on the topic.

Elizabeth, this was a good post. Thanks for the links to the different articles. I need to respond to more comments through email. That will be my goal for the rest of April.

Hello and what a great subject! I have had the same feelings from time to time...I have been a frequent whiner about this subject as a matter of fact! Yup...I was a member of the frequent whiners club until I decided to start leaving comments on other folks's blogs and adding them to my followers list. Now...I can't keep up and I am very small in comparison to the 50 and sometimes 150!!! followers some have!! I can't even imagine that! My father in law doesn't get many on his Goodoldbean blog but he has a loyal Swedish friend that always leaves a comment which is cool. It takes time and effort I think. I could spend half a day doing this but I actually do have a life?...I think I do anyway? So...if you have a chance...hop on over to Goodoldbeans and say hello to Woody...he's on my favorites to the right!! Great discusssion...love it.

This is a good topic. I suppose that I am leaving fewer comments than I used to simply because of time constraints. Even though I am unemployed, I share my computer with my two sons who also want a lot of time on it. I end up with no more time on the computer than I had before.

I also find myself trying to get away from the computer more and engaging in other activities.

Also, this computer is slowwwwww! It makes it hard to visit as much.

I probably leave comments once every few days now instead of daily.

Hope this answers some of your questions!

Kady

I discovered that leaving comments helps to get comments. Plus I get more when I participate in the themes. I am trying to get caught up on blog reading and commmenting more on posts these days. My daughter-in-law needs to read this post. I leave her commments, but she does not leave any on mine. In fact I am never sure if she reads it very often. Oh well. I have all my other blog friends so I won't complain too much.

I didn't get any comments at first but then I started leaving them on other blogs and that led to more visitors to my blog. I like that I have visitors and it's fine if they don't ever leave comments. If someone says something I made is cute or thanks me for the links I;ve posted, I appreciate that, but I would much rather get, for example, a comment about a bunny they made after I post a picture of the bunny I made. Oh and everybody on Blogger should turn on email notification because some of us leave comments on older posts and you won't know that if you don't receive emails about comments from Blogger.

Hi!
I have been doing the research that Kim left for us. I am trying to incorporate a question on my posts! I forget that most of the time! Have a great week end!

Among other games, football is considered as the most watched sporting event on the globe. Millions of football fans die hard to witness the biggest sporting event either on web or television. Some percentage of those people often turn excited and place bets on the outcome of the games to make few winning bucks. nfl betting baseball betting basketball betting boxing betting cricket betting darts betting football betting golf betting handball betting hockey betting rugby betting snooker betting tennis betting Sportsbook betting volume differs all through the year. Patrons have more attention in certain types of sports, thus a raise in wagered money is apparent when those sports are in time. From there, make sure that when you wager with an online casino that you know exactly what you are doing. The biggest mistake that you could possibly make would be to place bets on games that you are unsure of. For example, if you want to play blackjack at an online casino but do not know how, make sure you get some details first. If you do not, you are doing the equivalent of throwing your money out the window. The bottom line is that you can never win at an online casino if you do not know the rules of the games that you are going to play.
online casino http://www.casinolesoleil.com casino When you are seeking the play based on the bonus you should also check out the cashing out policies that are in place. There are some of the smaller casinos around that will limit the cash out that you can receive. In essence they are telling you when you can have the money that you have won and when you cannot have it. This is a very poor practice that takes place in some of the casinos and you should be mindful of such policies before you start playing. Most of the larger online casinos have no such limitations.
online casino http://www.redlotuscasino.com casino The internet is offering just about everything into the comforts of our home. From books, to clothes, food to diet plans, movies to music, you can get everything with just one click on a button. You really do not have to go far in getting these things, why, with just a computer set up, you can get everything you want right in the comfort of your own home. The ease and comfort of purchasing or selling something via the internet is the perfect lure for busy people who almost have no time to shop or drop by somewhere just to get what they need. And really, why not offer casinos? Pokers, bingo, blackjack and roulette is offered there, too. casino http://www.triumphcasino.com casino http://www.affrewards.com casino affiliate program As with all gambling bingo is totally addictive and you should be careful of its grip on you!
