I'm a Dog Person!

I know there are some people in the world that don't care for animals in general, but for the rest of us, we seem to be either dog or cat people.I am a dog person myself, but not a cat hater. I could have just as easily enjoyed being a cat owner, but discovered in my teens that I am horribly allergic to them. I think they're great pets for small spaces and much easier to care for than dogs in some ways.
For several years I've been wanting a dog of my own, someone small, like a Norwich terrier. I grew up with dogs in the house and they are great companions, so happy when you arrive home, love to go for walks or drives, and someone to sleep on your feet and keep them warm in the winter! First my landlord wouldn't allow any pets, and then when I bought my own place my family wanted me to wait because of my health. It's a good thing I did because I couldn't give a dog all the energy it would need right now. I do get to see my parents' and sister's dogs all the time. They are both mutts, which these days people are calling "hybrids". They are both 15 years old to the month, but are aging quite differently. Bo still thinks he's a puppy, and does a crazy run around the house and all the furniture when he gets home, barks at leaves blowing across the yard, and wants to play fetch. Murphy is an old man. He has cataracts in both eyes and can only see shapes, the vet thinks. He walks into walls and sometimes just walks in circles because he doesn't know what to do. He sleeps all day and doesn't hear people coming or going from the house. Although I grew up with dogs, neither lived to old age. One died of a heart tumor that no one knew about. He was at the vet's when we were on a vacation, so we just came home and were told. The other dog escaped from a kennel while we were on vacation, never to be seen again. Watching Murphy age has reminded me so much of Marley and Me that when I saw the ad for the movie coming out on DVD, I thought of this post. Everything John wrote about Marley getting old is exactly like Murphy, except Murph is so small it's easy to carry him up and down stairs. He stays with me when they go on vacations and he is a great little companion.
I read the book and really wanted to see the movie at Christmas time, but I couldn't walk that far through the lobby and into the theater, so I'm glad I will be able to get it On Demand or from Netflix starting tomorrow. Have you seen it? Is it as good as the book?
Another dog movie that I can watch again and again is Best in Show
which is written and directed by Christopher Guest. I enjoy all of his films: Spinal Tap, Waiting for Guffman, etc. but this one about all of the quirky characters at a New York dog show is absolutely hysterical. So what about you? Are you a dog or cat person?

I love both dogs (getting one in 4 days!) and cats (have 3), but there's something very special about the bond you can develop with a pup. I'm so sorry that Murphy is going downhill. It's so sad to see a family member suffer, whether human or fur baby.
I read Marley and Me, but found myself angry at what they made that dog go through for the last year or so of his life.

Dogs for me. We have 2 Lab-mixes, Maggie and Teddy. Both have a lot of health problems.

Maggie has terrible allergies and needs to take steroids to control them, but then she developed Cushing's syndrome and needs to take meds to stop her body from producing too much corticosteroid. She's such a sweetheart and it's so hard to keep her comfortable.

Teddy has cardiomyopathy and is on 4 cardiac meds right now. He was diagnosed about 3 1/2 years ago, at which time they gave him about 6 months to live. So he's on borrowed time. He's another sweetie - he has some strange ways but a sweetie just the same.

We used to have cats and they were great, but for me there's something special about a dog.

I am a dog person. I haven't read Marley and Me but I have heard it was a good book. The movie is supposed to be very sad. My 35 year old son went to see it with his family and they all cried. I do want to see the movie at some point.

Cute dogs! I am not a pet person. With 4 kids, I can't imagine adding another responsibility to our daily lives. Maybe when they leave the nest I will be!

I'm a CORGI person! Corgis aren't for everyone because of their activity level and herding instincts, but I absolutely adore the Pems! I started fostering for Lakeshore Corgi Rescue last year in addition to the monetary support through my etsy shop sales - they have a great group of volunteers, and have had many foster 'failures' because they go into the foster home, endear themselves to the foster mom, and get adopted into their foster home to be permanent members! I have owned cats as well, and have my favorite personality types among them They make great apartment pets - ease of care being the main reason I would choose one for apartment style living. But, I just love animals of all kinds!

Elizabeth, You know how much we love our dogs. They are like our children. They go everywhere with us. We keep their crates in the back of the Tahoe at all times. We do really like cats. But, I am allergic to them. So, no cats at our house. Hugs, Terrie

I am a dog person all the way! While I don't dislike cats, I have never been able to actually live with one.

I presently have an 11 1/2 year old jack russell terror named Jake. I very recently did a post on him relaxing in our new home. Since he is getting up there in years, I don't know how much longer we'll have him especially as we have no funds for paying for medical treatment if he should develop something serious. He sleeps a lot more than when he was younger, but he can still be full of piss and vinegar!

I saw Best in Show and would happily view it again. I did not see Marley because although I heard that it was good, I also heard people say they cried. I like to laugh; I don't want to pay to cry.

I have had cats, but my daughter is like you: allergic to them, so since she was 3, we've had dogs. Right now, we are dogless.

That was a horrible thing for the kennel people to your dog to escape.

well, of course dogs for me! I am allergic to cats so dogs are the focus in my house...two very spoiled dogs.

I'm more of a cat person... but I no longer have one and I don't believe I will get one... I don't want a litter box in my home.
I'm thinking I could be a dog person... if I had a little tiny one I could carry in a purse!

I'm both! I have 2 dogs and 3 kitties. My dogs are so special to me, they are more "human-like" than cats. My yellow labrador is my protector, for sure! Best in Show is freakin' hysterical and I LOVE that movie!

Marley and Me was wonderful...
it is a little sad when the dog dies but it is from very old age and he has been loved above measure!
I loved the book...the movie was good ...just not exactly like the book! That's just the way it is...different medium!
I love my two dogs...they fill up my life and day!

Hi Elizabeth

I am definately a dog person. My life has revolved around them for the last 10 years or so. I have fostered and adopted many. I also breed.. to good homes only of course. There is just something about a dog that can brighten your darkest days. When we found out my oldest Alexa had Epilepsy we went out and got her, her own dog. Sadly this last Novemeber she was killed by our next door neighbors Rottweiler. We miss our little Liloh. I still have 3 and we just purchased another dog and will get her on the 10th of this month.
Marley and me was great movie but I cried like a baby at the end. I am sure Murphy has had a long happy life. ;)

I am definitely an all animal person. I love cats, and we are about to adopt a dog. Of course I will be delighted to have some Silkie Bantam chickens again. Delighted to meet you Elizabeth!

What cute doggies! I feel bad for Murphy walking into things. Maggie is 15 too and I know she has losr her peripheral visoin because she will turn and walk into a wall or my leg right next to her. But she still runs around like a maniac when she can and her appetite is wonderful. I think when you're ready for a furry companion, Elizabeth, go to a rescue and tell them you want an older calm couch potato type. :) I read Marley and Me and thought it was great but did not see the movie.
