Make things myself! I am making my dad a holiday sweatshirt that says HO, HO, HO on it. I made him one about 15 years ago that is all ratty and he still insists on wearing it. A new one is definitely needed! I am making my aunt a brag book, a small scrapbook that she can carry in her purse and show off pictures at bingo or her Wednesday coffee klache. The only album she has is of her wedding, so this will include current pictures and some from long ago. Something similar to this from Strawberry Stampers. Last year I made everyone Christmas-mix CDs of fun songs like Santa Must be Polish, Rudolph, Need a Little Christmas, etc.
Buy Handmade! There are so many great things made by local artisans and sold at local craft stores and holiday fairs. This is where I will get many of my gifts for girlfriends who like jewelry and appreciate things that are handmade. Buy American! My nephews are difficult to buy for now that they are almost 14. They only want electronics or expensive music equipment.
Forget giving them books or games! For their birthday I got them cool t-shirts from Threadless.com, and that's what I'm going to do for Christmas, too. Threadless is neat because they have artists submit design ideas and then viewers vote on them. If a design is chosen it then becomes part of the inventory. The boys like the funny ones that make you think, like this one called I Used to Fit. The quality of the shirts and sweatshirts is excellent, and they are not something you see every day. I also like using the web site; you can tell what size you are looking for and then it only shows you things available in that size. I hate when I love something and then find out it's not available!
Donate to a Charity! Sadly, most people in my family would not appreciate this. However, I saw a fun pink plaid fleece pullover at the Breast Cancer site, and it is in purple at the Animal Rescue Site. I'll be getting this for my niece. Not all of the merchandise is pink or purple, nor does it necessarily have ribbons all over it. Buying from these charitable sites is a way to make a difference, also.
Go Green! On Etsy a shopper can search for eco-friendly products, or those that are recycled/upcycled. Both the Breast Cancer site and the Animal Rescue Site sell eco-friendly products as well as items made by cottage industries in developing nations.
Buy Books! My Friend Amy pointed out recently that the publishing industry is struggling and people should consider books as gifts this holiday season. A great coffee table book that someone would not buy for herself is a great idea! I am getting my mom a bunch of paperbacks. She reads even more than I do, but she either gets used paperbacks at a swap or checks out books from the library. She never gets new paperbacks, so this will be a treat for her.

Those are really great ideas :) thanks for them. And I don't mind at all that you linked more than one posting. The more the merrier!

What great ideas. I too, am rethinking expensive Christmas gifts..your ideas have given me some.
It is so cool to hear you mention Threadless.com. My niece, Jamie, is the artist for their "Odd But Cute" shirt. According to their catalog it has sold out again! Just do a search for Odd But Cute in their catalog.
Jamie is going for her Masters Degree in Graphic Artistry and Videography at a college in New York. Funny to know that it all started with she and I playing with clay and paper crafts when I used to babysit her.
Thanks for sharing Elizabeth. xxoo
I love your blog!I too have a shop on etsy.com (http://goldie2675.etsy.com) where I am selling adorable upcycled headwraps and I hope you will help me pass along the info! I recently had a customer who is going through chemo purchase one of these headwraps from my shop to wear during her treatment as a unique and stylish alternative to a baseball cap! It gave me the great idea to start marketing these 100% recycled fabric wraps as a stylish, feel good alternative for women and children going through chemo to help them feel good about themselves!
Both my maternal grandmother and my husband's mother passed away very young after losing their battles to breast cancer, and both of our families have a long history of breast cancer battles behind us. I decided I wanted to do something to make a difference in the lives of other wonderful women and children who are surviving!
All sales of upcycled headwraps and headscarves in my shop will have a portion of the proceeds donated to cancer research and support!
If you know of a great woman or girl who is looking for something to help them look and feel beautiful during chemo, come stop by my shop and consider one of these wraps as a holiday gift!
Great ideas! I've been buying a lot of my gifts on the Etsy shops and I've been really pleased so far with the handmade gifts!
Thanks for the ideas!
Great tips, we can all use a little help this time of year.
These are some fantastic ideas! I'm all for making things for Christmas. With a wedding on Jan 3rd, Greg and I agreed that it should be simple things or handmade gifts. Fortunately, I have a lot of girlfriends that love jewelry, so I already made necklaces, earrings and bracelets for them! I love the "homemade" idea!
Almost all of my gifts are following along the same lines. For my youngest nephews I'm doing PlanToys since they're safe for them. For my closest family I've written a cookbook that I'm having published for them and making jams, stained glass and spice mixes.
What great ideas!
I am definitely buying books this year for everyone, but am also making home-made treats from the kitchen & making a custom "basket" for every family on my list.
Great suggestions! I'm a big fan of Etsy. I have a friend who makes jewelry and I buy a lot of presents from her. Who doesn't like a pretty necklace or earrings?! And how nice to say that a friend made them.
I love your ideas. I'm planning on doing a combination of them all!
Such great suggestions, thanks so much for sharing!
thanksgiving blessings,
melissa
