Candy Cane Holder

I am a little crafty, not necessarily artistic. Whatever you call it, I like to make things!
Many of the things I make I have also done with my students or with after school groups. This Santa candy cane holder is one of the most popular Christmas crafts I've done with children. It's cute to hang on the tree, or give to young last minute guests. I always have a few ready at the holidays for when the unexpected friend shows up.
If you do this project with children, the process can be as complex or simple as you choose to make it, depending on their age. I've worked with kids from 8-14 using different methods. You could give them patterns, pins, and scissors and let them do the whole thing on their own, have the pieces traced for them ahead of time, and for the very young, or when you're short on time having everything cut out for them to assemble.

SUPPLIES
fabric, felt, or thick craft glue - Do not use regular white glue. The felt just absorbs it like a sponge and doesn't hold things together.
red & white felt
small piece of pink/flesh colored felt
sequins or beads
google eyes
pom pom
cord or ribbon to hang

Felt pieces all cut out
Here s my "original" hand-drawn pattern. I would love to make something more professional-looking, but you know all about my shaky hands these days. If you craft you'll probably make your own version anyway. If you'd like to use this as a reference, you should be able to click on the pattern below and enlarge it to full size to save. It is a gif file, because I don't know how to put pdf files into Blogger. The basic body pattern can easily be modified for an angel, snowman, or elf. With all of the different colored candy canes you could have blue and pink elves just like in Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer!Be sure to let me know if you have problems with the pattern, and if you make these, or come up with your own design I'd love to see them. I have other candy cane holder ideas that I can share if people have an interest, so let me know in the comments.

I love this. Thanks, I think I should be able to handle this one! I'd put it on packages instead of bows if I didn't know my dog would try to eat poor Santa's arms and legs.

Wicked cute! My mom makes one that is a mouse. The crook of the cane comes up as his curly tail.

I'll have to share this one with her too!

Cute project. I have a mouse candy cane holder that a neighborhood kid was going door to door selling one year, selling them for $1 each. In fact, I bought 3 of them. I hang them on my tree each year (with fresh candy canes). Got my money's worth!

Elizabeth, what a cute project! I used to be "The Party Mom" for Jacob's class. It was such fun. The kids used to love to see me come. We made the mouse that everyone is talking about and they really enjoyed that. I am going to pass this on to my friend that still has grade schoolers. It really is cute. ~ Robyn

An Original recording of a Lady GaGa Song was Unsealed this evening with no traces of where it came from.
Some say that it was leaked from GaGa's Record Label's headquarters.
