Do you remember back in the day when political candidates had all sorts of swag to get their name out among the public? Bumper stickers, buttons, t-shirts, yard signs, tie pins, I've even seen scarves! With the growth of instant media, the public no longer needs these items to know what their candidates look like or the issues on which they stand. Supposedly.I had intended to use these buttons for a Vintage Thingies Thursday, but I have so much Halloween that it is going to bring me right up to the election. So here are my campaign buttons, all but one of which are BLUE! They are actually my mom's, shoved into the bottom of her jewelry box. I thought I'd tell you a little about these guys, and 1 gal, since many are local, or you may be too young to remember.
This button would be held on by folding the little clip over a collar. It could only be worn a few times because the clip would break off, but these are cheaper to manufacture than actual pins. The image on the button is the Charter Oak, the same image on the Connecticut state quarter. In 1990 Lowell Weicker and Eunice Groark were elected on the A Connecticut Party ticket as Governor and Lt. Governor.
Lowell P. Weicker served as a U.S. Representative, U.S. Senator, and Governor of Connecticut, and unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination for President in 1980. Although he was a Republican during his time in Congress, he later left the Party and became one of the few independents to be elected as a state governor in the United States in recent years. Since his retirement he has moved more towards the Democratic Party.
Remember the Duke? I do! He ran for President when I was in college. His wife spoke at my college that year and Secret Service were all over the place. One of my fondest memories of Mike Dukakis is when he visited General Dynamics and rode around in a tank. What a goonie-bird! Dukakis was Governor of Massachusetts, and is also cousin to Olympia Dukakis the actress.
Well, we all know who won this election, I hope! LBJ finished out JFK's term and ran for President with Hubert Humphrey as his running mate in 1964. In 1968 he spoke his famous line, I shall not seek, and I will not accept, the nomination of my party for another term as your President.
Since Johnson was no longer in the running, the Democrats chose Humphrey as their candidate in 1968. His running mate, Edmund Muskie, was a former Governor of Maine and served in the Senate until 1980. We all should know how this election turned out! Can you say Tricky Dick?
This is the complete collection, so you can see a couple of buttons I didn't write about. The tiny green one is actually very significant, even tough it's not BLUE! Ella Grasso was the first female governor of Connecticut, serving from 1975-1980. Grasso was the first woman in the country who was elected governor "in her own right," without being the wife or widow of a past governor. She was very popular and probably would have continued in serve as governor if she did not have ovarian cancer. She died six weeks after resigning office. I remember when she died and lay in state at the CT State House. My family waited in line for hours to pay our respects. It was February and really cold, but it was very important to my parents that we do this as a family!

Happy Halloween!

This was a great post! I remember those presidential campaigns! I remember those little fold over buttons too. They were always falling off, lol.
I had to laugh at that Weiker Liker button. In my demented brain I read, "I'm a Wicker Licker."

These are great. What a wonderful collection of political buttons. I remember the fold down type. It was nice to see some of those again. I find it really neat that almost all of them had blue on them...perfect for Blue monday. Have a great week Elizabeth.
Great post and interesting collection! I remember those fold over buttons, but happily I can say that I am young enough to only remember the Dukakis election--(of the ones you highlighted)!
Happy Blue Monday.

Gosh, we don't really have buttons as much here in Australia any more. I so love your collection though. The Kennedy one must be a collector's item. I bet your collection would be valuable too!. Very interesting post. Thanks!
This is sad but I see Dukakis and all I remember is Kitty trying to kill herself with rubbing alcohol. (I may be remembering that wrong and really should Google it to be sure.) I like the Kennedy button. And, yeah, those little fold over clippy things were always breaking off. Fun post, Elizabeth!
Hey, I just noticed the Google Light a blue doodle thingie. :) I took down my Black Box widget because I was playing with it too much.
It used to be that all buttons were those fold-tabs. You're right; they didn't last long. That ovarian cancer is THE killer; aren't I fortunate to be a survivor from it? Thanks for sharing. Happy Blue Monday!
Your collection brought back some memories. Happy Blue Monday!

What a great collection of political buttons. How funny that so many of them are blue. It was nice getting a little history lesson behind each of them.
Hope you have a great week!!
Thanks for the stories accompanying the buttons. Very nice collection making this a very interesting post.
Hi Elizabeth, I love your collection of campaign buttons! I remember all of them, sigh, it shows my age.
Happy Blue Monday!
Love, Ann
Wow! I loved your post. It was so interesting. It brought back a lot of memories for me. Happy Blue Monday!
What a great timely collection of blues!
Very nice collection and info Elizabeth. I remember my older sister campaigning for Edmund Muskie. We both belonged to the Young Democrats club but I only wanted to be around the food and big names!
A most appropriate and informative post my dear!
{I got a gift basket today! Thanks again}
Hi Elizabeth, what an interesting post in such a timely manner. I wanted to buy a Hillary button at the state fair this year and they were all sold out. ~ Robyn
My husband loves old political campaign buttons. He has a small collection with some that you do too and you have so many I've never seen before. They are so much fun to look back on. Thanks for sharing these photos!
Oh the Kennedy button must be special. I miss those days. :)
I looked at the Dukakis button and thought - who the heck is Bentsen?? Talk about a foot note in history!
And I hadn't been by in a few days, so when I scrolled down and got an eyefull of plastic flashback - audible gasp!
What a great post.. Come visit. xx
I love your collection of buttons! Your Halloween items are great. Thanks for sharing them. Neat ideas!

I love your collection of campaign buttons. I too have some buttons from past political races. I had them attached to an pot holder I never used in my kitchen and hung on the refrigerator handle. Now I think they're in a drawer somewhere. :) xxoo
Heehee, I remember Beat Bush!
Hi Elizabeth,
Looks like I missed your Blue Monday post on Monday (I was a bit out of whack this past weekend and Monday) These are great blue buttons you've collected. Have a good rest of the week.
I love them.
